Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this course is to explore some of the contemporary controversies in both the noun phrase and the clause in the English language. Concretely, this course helps students develop their understanding of syntactic analysis and to develop their ability to analyze English phrases, clauses and sentences in terms of form and function. The course comprises advanced syntactic analysis and trains the capacity to make use of relevant research material (i.e. references, corpora) in the study of English grammar. A further course aim is to show students how to work empirically and write an empirical academic paper in linguistics. Therefore, in this course students will use corpora to investigate creative syntactic phenomenon.

In this course, students gain:

i) an understanding of basic concepts and problems in the field of syntax pertaining to the study of English,
ii) an overview of the resources and tools for syntactic research, in particular, the use of corpora
iii) an insight into basic syntactic analysis,
iv) an insight into what it means to work empirically,
v) a greater understanding of the conventions of writing an empirical paper in linguistics.
