Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

English is a fast-changing, global language. Therefore, being aware of the variation of linguistic form and how this variation effects meaning is critical when teaching and assessing grammar. This course provides students with the basic theoretical concepts and tools for analyzing syntax and presents some contemporary issues in the study of English syntax. In particular, this course will provide students with an overview of the elements of syntax (e.g. constructions, word class, clauses etc.) and general tools to analyze syntax (e.g. dependency, heads & modifiers, constituency etc.), thereby providing students the means to conduct independent research on ‘real world’ data. Furthermore, in the context of discussing contemporary syntactic issues, students are made aware of the link between syntactic form and meaning.

Aims:
- to become aware of and be able to apply theoretical tools for syntactic analysis
- to become familiar with some of the critical issues in English syntax
- to critically analyze and reflect on scientific papers in the field
- to find relevant literature on a specific topic/question
- to prepare students for independent research and writing academic papers

Methods:
Reading, discussions, peer-group interaction, in-class and online exercises, lecturer input, autonomous research.
