Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course offers a critical discussion of areas of linguistic theory and description. The areas treated will include approaches to grammar, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, and applied linguistics.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The objective is to consolidate and extend students' knowledge of different approaches to linguistic description, and importantly, to encourage them to develop their own critical understanding of these, particularly as they relate to the study of English.
Examination topics
Lecture, student participation in session and independent study between sessions (readings).
