Students will complete group field work projects that establish and describe forms of the presence of English in the Viennese LL. For data collection, students will take photographs of LL signs in designated survey areas in Vienna. Data collection and analysis are guided by the research methodology, designs, and rationale of the ongoing FWF-project 'English in the Linguistic Landscape of Vienna, Austria (ELLViA)' see http://homepage.univie.ac.at/barbara.soukup/ellvia.htmlThe goals of this course are
i) to further develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of linguistics, with a particular focus on conducting sociolinguistic field work;
ii) to develop course participants' knowledge and insight in the topic area of linguistic landscapes and language use in the public space.
