Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This is a seminar for students interested into current research of individual differences in aptitude/ability of second / multiple language acquisition. The seminar will concentrate on all aspects of language aptitude from an interdisciplinary perspective (classical SLA concepts, aptitude testing, psychology of language learning/aptitude, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience), backed up by practical insights into this topic by own research projects of the students on differences between high and low aptitude second language learners.
Assessment and permitted materials
field work (including testing participants and statistical analysis of data), project presentations, all-class discussions of project presentations, group discussions, final paper, final exam, (active participation during class is assessed as well).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This course aims at introducing the participants to the subfield of SLA-research aptitude and individual differences (ID) research with special focus on neuro- and psycholinguistic aspects, providing practical background information and insights into the nature of research on language aptitude as well as familiarizing with recent and ongoing research in the field and the tools used (testing, statistics). A further aim of this course is to sensitize participants towards the importance of individual differences in language aptitude for the teaching of foreign languages and the implications for language teaching and language education. The course should be highly interactive with students elaborating own topics and reporting/discussing them in class.
Examination topics
introductory lectures, student presentations of primary / secondary research, group discussions, seminar paper.
