Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses concepts, phenomena and analytical tools which straddle the borderline between semantics (the study of meaning), and pragmatics (the study of language in use). These include concepts like deixis, presupposition, implicature, and speech acts, all of which can be approached from a purely truth-functional point of view as semantic notions (i.e. in terms of their truth or falsity), or from the point of view of the language user, as pragmatic phenomena (i.e. in terms of their contextual appropriateness). Thus, we will explore the duality of linguistic reality and try to tease out the semantic and pragmatic aspects of particular notions, also socio-pragmatic in nature, like power, solidarity, directness, politeness, etc.

The minimum requirements for passing the course are:Research paper (oral presentation, ca. 30 minutes; written version, ca. 20 pages).
