Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an overview of recent conceptual, sociolinguistic and descriptive research on English as a lingua franca (ELF). Together, we will review some existing ELF findings, focusing in particular on pragmatic concepts and strategies. We will also discuss potential pedagogical implications that emerging ELF findings might have for school contexts and teacher education.
Throughout the semester, students will work independently on an individual topic. They will either a) analyze ELF data from the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE), a one-million-word corpus of recorded and transcribed real-world ELF interactions, or b) critically analyze and discuss documents related to English language
teaching and consider practical implications of ELF for ELT.
N.B.: Presentations will be blocked at a mini-conference on January 15+16 (see Termine). Attendance during the entire mini-conference is mandatory for course completion! Weekly sessions will only be held until December.
