Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Participants will be assessed on the basis of assignments, class participation, proposal, presentation and a seminar paper. The proposal, presentation and paper are based on a research project each participant will select and work on during the course.Assessment criteria: in-class participation (20%); presentation (20%); proposal (10%); seminar paper (50%).
Examination topics
This is an interactive course, involving discussions, group work and presentations. The participants will be required to give an in-class presentation and to produce a seminar paper.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is traditionally conceived of as a materials-based and teaching-led movement, catering to specific student needs in specific learning contexts. ESP thus serves as an umbrella term covering uses of English in academic and professional settings, ranging from business communication, scientific or workplace discourse to conversational practices in intercultural settings. More recently, the scope of ESP has been broadened to include specialist discourses in several disciplinary areas, involving varying degrees of specialized language. This course therefore aims to familiarize students with English as a language of specialized discourse and communication. Using a range of resources and techniques for analyzing text and dialogue, we will identify the distinctive properties of specialized discourse in order to determine its level of specificity, as compared to general language.Course aims
On completion of the course, participants will:
- further develop the research and analytical skills necessary for the study of language
- enhance their knowledge and insight in the topic areas of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Specialized Communication
- conduct their own empirical investigations and gain insights into the methodology of ESP/Specialized Communication
- deepen their understanding of different approaches to ESP/Specialized Communication.This course has been subdivided into three parts. In part I, participants will be introduced to the many purposes of ESP/Specialized Communication. This introductory phase involves the discussion of articles and book chapters as well as hands-on work with language data. During this stage, students will be required to develop their research questions and work on their proposals. In part II, students are able to work on their individual projects. In part III, participants will present their projects and findings at the end-of-term conference.
