Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar course will focus on language and identity in Asian British film and will be co-taught with Susanne Reichl. Specifically, we will be looking at feature films such as "Bend It Like Beckham", "East Is East", "Ae Fond Kiss" and "Anita and Me".In an attempt to analyse film language from a sociocultural linguistic point of view, we will first learn about various approaches to interactional analysis (e.g. speech act theory, politeness theories, conversation analysis, multimodality, variationist sociolinguistics) and then apply them to film sequences. By focussing on aspects such as turn-taking, forms of address, use of swear words or code-switching, this course will throw light on the complexity and fluidity with which identity is interactionally constructed on screen.
