Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is specifically tailored to students in the UF Englisch program. Its purpose is to make more explicitly visible the links between the research field of sociolinguistics and the profession and practice of teaching at Austrian high schools. The focus is on exploring (1) how knowledge of sociolinguistics may provide a scaffold for teachers personal ethos and instructing persona and (2) how a basic knowledge of sociolinguistics can be taught to high school students and to what benefit. The topic of multilingualism will be of particular concern.
Assessment and permitted materials
Class participation, readings and other assignments, group project and presentation, individual project work and write-up.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In this course, students will reflect upon fruitful linkages between sociolinguistics and their future professional lives. One hands-on goal is to develop projects for the implementation of teaching sociolinguistic themes within Austrian English language curricula.
Examination topics
Interactive input, guided group project work, discussions.
