Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture series focusses on linguistic variation and change. The complex questions involved in this matter will be addressed from the perspectives of various linguists and philologists from the faculty. The overarching theme of this multidisciplinary lecture series will be the search for systemic, social, cognitive, and other factors that determine linguistic variation and change and whose impact is reflecetd in the histories of languages. Crucially, our search will also force us to discuss factors that impede change and that help to keep linguistic constituents or patterns of variability historically stable. Empirically, we shall focus on languages spoken in Europe, but some non-European languages will also be looked at. The course is open to advanced students from all philological disciplines.
