Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course will provide a concise survey of American literary history in its specific contexts, including political and historical developments. Students will be familiarized with some of the key texts of American literature from the Iroquois Creation Story to the contemporary novel. Because of the limited time frame, we will focus on highlights (including Puritanism, Enlightenment, the American Renaissance, Realism and Local Color, Modernism, Postmodernism, and Ethnic Fiction), so additional reading is required.
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance of lecture, regular reading, final written exam.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This lecture course aims to give students an overview of the most important developments within American literary history of the past 300 years and to enable them to apply the critical and analytical tools acquired in this lecture in their own analyses.
Examination topics
Lecture, independent reading, e-learning
Reading list
Most of the texts are contained in the Norton Anthology of American Literature, which is recommended for purchase, especially if you have decided to place the focus of your studies on American literature.
A shorter, concise reader of all required texts will be available for purchase from CopyStudio (Schwarzspanierstr.) in late February / early March.
