the transcript of “Nanette” (2018) by stand-up comic Hannah Gadsby, the one-woman play Fleabag (2019) by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Ali Wong’s letters to her daughters Dear Girls (2019), Tig Notaro’s autobiographical account i’m just a person: my year of death, cancer and epiphany (2017) and a collection of essays by Scaachi Koul entitled One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter (2017).In this course students will critically engage with these texts and examine their form in terms of structure, narrative perspective, and style, as well as the themes each authoress touches on in light of larger theoretical contexts. In this vein, we will reflect on the role of ‘funny women writing’ in the literary marketplace and the potential significance of these narratives. After completing this course students will have gained an understanding of a variety of literary genres (e.g.: life-writing, autobiography, autofiction) and of the role of humor in narratives about or inspired by the personal. In this course we will touch on the basics of academic writing and research methodology which will allow students to work on a research project, starting out with a reflective essay task and research proposal with an annotated bibliography that will then progress into a final term paper on a topic of their choice related to the material covered in this course.
