Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

After model analyses of a number of texts of all genres and from all periods of English literature we will analyse a Victorian farce and a contemporary comic novel. With 'The Magistrate', a hilarious play, A. W. Pinero introduced a new type of farce to English theatre, the farce of character. William Boyd's first novel 'A Good Man in Africa' also features a number of farcical elements. It is a postcolonial text in which humour is produced by breaking all kinds of taboos.
