Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this course, we will examine literary and cinematic portrayals of disability. Focusing on the issue of marginalization, we will look over the danger of defining disability as a form of weakness and representing it as equal to femininity. In doing so, we will try to understand to what extent this reveals the connection between female oppression and the ableist views that are still promoted by some individuals and institutions. Analyzing a wide array of texts – from novels to films to TV shows to the Walt Disney’s Animated Classics – that discuss physical and mental impairments, we will investigate the profound role that age, race, class, and gender play in both defining and perceiving disability socially, culturally, and politically.PLEASE NOTE: This Proseminar will be accompanied by the Schreibassistenz program offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL). In this context, students are required to meet with a writing assistant twice (approx. 50 minutes per meeting) to discuss and receive feedback on their written assignments which they will then, after having sufficient time to rework them, have to submit as part of the Proseminar credit requirements.
