Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will discuss major texts written by so-called "Puritans" (Separatists, Congregationalists, Calvinists) in the 17th century, from the time of their persecution under James I and the mass emigration to "New England" through the Commonwealth to the Restoration era, texts (mostly excerpts) by William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, John Milton, John Bunyan, and Cotton and Increase Mather.
We will also read the frist "Puritan" novel, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe" (1719), and Arthurt Miller's play about the Massachusetts witch craze (and contemporary McCarthyism), The Crucible (1953).

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in class, quality of the term paper (and its presentation in class) and the short assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This class aims at advancing participants' theoretical and practical skills in literary criticism and at familiarising them with the basic techniques required for writing an academic paper.

Examination topics

Classroom discussion, presentations, research assignments.
