Aims, contents and method of the course

Literature thrives on conflict. While harmony in literature equals stagnation, tension is what gets a story going. In this course, we will read short stories, poems and plays by James Tiptree, Edith Wharton, Toni Morrison, Angela Carter, Ian McEwan, Carol Ann Duffy and William Shakespeare, all of which have tension as a major plot device and interpersonal conflict as a central theme. While we will concentrate on acquiring and applying basic interpretive skills, we will also debate related theoretical concepts and the various issues implied in the texts under debate.
