Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will continue last year's survey of the development of women's writing into the 19th century. The Victorian period finally saw women writers' ascent to prominence and canonicity. We will concentrate on the major female novelists of the time, such as the Bronte sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot, but also discuss 19th century examples of Gothic fiction and the sensation novel.

Elizabeth Gaskell: North and South
George Eliot: Middlemarch

These novels have been ordered in the Facultas bookshop (10% discount in March) but are also available as electronic texts on the internet.

In addition, excerpts from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret and poems by Elizebeth Barrett Browning, Emily Bronte and Christina Rossetti have been put on the moodle platform of this course.
