Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course will continue last year's survey of the development of women's writing into the 19th century. The Victorian period finally saw women writers' ascent to prominence and canonicity. We will concentrate on the major female novelists of the time, such as the Bronte sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot, but also discuss 19th century examples of Gothic fiction and the sensation novel.
