Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar we will discuss 4 highly acclaimed modern Australian novels which give an insight into topics frequently addressed by contemporary Australian writers, especially the relationship between white settlers and the Aboriginal population. The texts discussed will include historical novels such as Grenville's The Secret River or Malouf's Remembering Babylon, both dealing with the conflict-fraught history of race relations in Australian history, as well as Kim Scott's That Deadman Dance, which deals with the same problem from the perspective of an Aboriginal author.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to write a seminar paper or BA thesis (to be handed in by the end of January at the latest), to give an oral presentation in class, to participate in the discussion in class and to write an end-test. All students must read all the texts we will discuss in the course.
