Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

"A play should be a thrill like a fantastic rollercoaster." What Martin McDonagh in an interview in 1997 described as one of the principles of his dramaturgy has since been generally acknowledged as a hallmark of his oeuvre (esp. the so-called "Leenane Trilogy") even as he seems to have drifted into another genre and nowadays is often better known as a filmmaker, viz. his Oscar-winning short film "Six Shooter" (2006) and the internationally acclaimed "In Bruges" (2008) and "Seven Psychopaths" (2012). The films perpetuate in another medium typical features associated with McDonagh the dramatist: the bodily grotesque (resulting from the portrayal of physical violence), violent language, solecisms, non-sequiturs, inconsequential dialogues, and, of course, black humour and cynicism.

NB: Students wishing to register early and ready to take on one of the topics for oral presentations in October/early November are kindly asked to contact Prof. Huber via e-mail wern.huber@univie.ac.at asap:
