Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Students get to know the creativity of the selected representative Australian literary authors with the emphasis on the 20th and 21st century:
- Analysis and interpretation of the selected literary texts and the application of various critical approaches. Texts will be given to students in class (poetry and short prose, some texts will be made available to students on the e-learning platform).
- Identification of the most significant literary genres and authors, as well as the specificity of the historical and cultural development of Australia, from indigenous, convict to contemporary migrant and multicultural issues and the related issues of literary hybridization.
- Description of different schools of criticism and creative traditions in Australian literary and critical history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to write a seminar paper or BA thesis (to be handed in by the end of January at the latest), to give an oral presentation of the paper in class, to participate in class discussions and to sit for an end-test. Students must read all the texts discussed in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims and Competences gained:
- Knowledge of the selected Australian authors, with special regard to contemporary literary creativity: novels (My Briliant Career, The Year of Living Dangerously, Five Bells, Sarah Thornhill,), selected short stories and poetry. The list will be handed to the students in class.
- The ability to reflect on different interpretive standpoints, depending on the milieu and the contextualization of literary works in the appropriate socio-political context and to formulate an effective, well argued and linguistically correct oral presentation of the seminar paper in class.
