Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Traditionally, 1819 is regarded as the starting point of the vampire's staggering literary career. Since then, the figure of the vampire has never quite gone out of fashion, proving to be truly immortal, or 'undead'. This is due in part to the vampire's early assimilation into pop culture, with cult series such as The Southern Vampire Mysteries or The Twilight Saga bearing witness to the recent upsurge in vampire mania. Conceiving of the vampire as a vehicle for the shifting concerns of modern sensibility, we will trace the figure’s transformation from fanged fiend to fashion icon.

Issues discussed: generic convention, generic evolution; the encoding of cultural anxieties; cultural metaphor; the treatment of national identity, gender, religion and sexuality in works of fantasy

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation, presentation, pop-up exams, seminar paper.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Active participation 10%, presentation 30%, mini-exams 10%, seminar paper 50%.
