Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In this seminar we will analyse contemporary novels which explore phenomena beyond the normal in terms of a variety of transgressions. Racial, religious and moral taboos are broken as well as prevailing rules and norms of human co-existence. Two of the novels are set in Africa, one featuring the comic adventures of a contemporary picaro in a newly independent fictitious African country, the other a disturbing portrait of post-apartheid South Africa. Two of the novels are set in England, one an epistolary novel in which a literary scholar attempts to uncover the mystery of creativity, the other an unsettling study of loneliness and obsession in a school setting.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in class discussions, research paper (20-25 pages), final essay.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Introduce students to contemporary novels which focus on transgressive behaviour, a hallmark of our society, in a variety of ways, by acquainting the reader with fascinating as well as problematic characters. All four novels are also interesting from a narratological point of view, narrative agents ranging from an unreliable narrator and idiosyncratic correspondent to eccentric and peculiar focalisers.
Examination topics
interactive; students' presentations, class discussions.
Reading list
The four texts, William Boyd 'A Good Man in Africa', Michael Frayn 'The Trick of It', J. M. Coetzee 'Disgrace', Zoe Heller 'Notes on a Scandal', are available at facultas on campus.
