Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to acquaint students with novels by prominent American writers composed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Apart from William Faulkner, whose achievement as the most significant writer from the American South was recognized by the Nobel Prize in literature, the authors chosen were either early expatriates or as Midwesterners responded intensely to their experiences in Europe during the Jazz Age. Their novels quickly put American fiction on the map and alerted European readers to the literary potential and achievements of North American writers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Seminar paper (20-22 pages), oral presentation, regular attendance and active class participation, two written reports on sessions of up to two pages, final written test.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Familiarizing the participants with classic novels by American writers of different cultural backgrounds composed between the 1870s and the 1930s.

Examination topics

Student presentations of research papers on the topics chosen, general discussion of the texts and their location in literary tradition.
