a starting point two seminal essays from minority, subaltern and
postcolonial studies, 'Can the Subaltern Speak?' (Spivak) and 'Who Can Write as other?' (Fee), we approach each text with questions of
representation, voice, narrative, and perspective. Studying the
insider view on how these cultures wish to depict their histories,
realities, imaginaries and aesthetics offers a counter discourse to
our Eurocentric perspective and expectations. Analytical techniques of
narratology for fiction and social semiotics for critical film analysis unpack how these works challenge our white European stereotypes about these cultures.
