Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Ghost stories were a hugely popular medium in Victorian times. Often serialised in magazines, they not only provided entertainment to a huge reading public, but also permitted writers to address topics deemed unsuitable for more 'serious' literature. In this course, we will read and discuss the works of well-known authors such as Charles Dickens, Sheridan LeFanu and Elizabeth Gaskell alongside lesser-known representatives of the genre.
Assessment and permitted materials
oral presentation including handout (40%); active participation in class (30%); final written exam (30%)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of this course is to give students a forum in which to apply their skills in literary analysis to a relatively unknown corpus of texts, and to discuss their findings in class. Particular emphasis will be laid on narrative strategies used to elicit feelings of terror and suspense in the reader, but also to the wide range of controversial topics that lie beneath the surface of many of these works.
