Aims, contents and method of the course

In 1957, Frank O'Connor, a master of the genre himself, laid down the law for future generations of students and critics of the Irish Short Story. O'Connor thought that the modern Irish short story was "a distinct art form," that it sprang into being when it had shed "the limitations of its popular origin" after being cross-fertilised by Russian and French models. In the history of Irish cinema, the Irish Short Story has provided important sources for inspiration and re-interpretation. Indeed, many famous Irish films are based on short stories, thus providing ample opportunity for close reading and comparison.
The following films (plus the corresponding short stories) are proposed for close scrutiny:
- The Quiet Man (1952; dir. John Ford / based on a short story by Maurice Walsh)
- The Woman Who Married Clark Gable (1985; dir. Thaddeus O'Sullivan / Seán O'Faoláin)
- The Dead (1987; dir. John Huston / James Joyce)
- Korea (1995; dir. Cathal Black / John McGahern)
- Albert Nobbs (2011; dir. Rodrigo García / George Moore)

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, active participation in class, PowerPoint presentation, final test (written).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is the aim of this course to introduce students to some of the classics of the Irish Short Story tradition and their filmic counterparts/adaptations (or vice versa) and explore the intermedial connections between literature and film.

Examination topics

Team presentations, class discussion; classroom discourse will be supplemented by visual aids.

A customised anthology will be available from StudienServiceStelle Anglistik after Feb 28. Further material for obligatory and ancillary reading will be provided on an e-learning platform.
