Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The history of drama is characterized by a basic dichotomy. The dramatic world appears as either unalterable or amenable to change, fate is presented as either a benevolent or a malign force, the audience are moved to either frantic laughter or empathetic tears. In two parallel courses, we will investigate the curious tendency of viewing human experience in tragic or comic terms, focusing on possible anthropological triggers, aesthetic methods and historical development. Discussing seminal texts from the English comedy/tragedy canon, we will explore the interplay between ancient mechanisms, current ideology and topical message.
