Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Christopher Hitchens, the eminent columnist of Vanity Fair, wrote about W.H.Auden (1907-1973): ”Auden had three of the qualities that make poets immortal. He wrote beautifully about love, movingly about war, and he was witty.” (2004). This interactive class is devoted to Auden’s poetry. We will look at his work from multiple perspectives, and from diverse methodological angles. We will have sessions with guest speakers and, should we manage time-wise, travel to Kirchstetten, Lower Austria, where Auden spent a substantial part of his life.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance, active in-class participation, reading assignments; minutes, presentations, interventionist project OR short academic paper (10 pages); final essay

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You know about different approaches to poetry and are acquainted with the life and work of W.H. Auden.

Examination topics

Small-group and all-class discussions of regular set readings, student presentations, expert/guest session, excursion, if possible
