Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar will cover a number of contemporary South African crime novels after the fall of apartheid.Please note: A list with four early topics will be posted at Prof. Mengel's office door and on the Department website in due time. Those students taking one of the four early topics will be enrolled in the seminar before places are allotted (250 points). Students volunteering should get into contact with Prof. Mengel by e-mail in the course of the holidays.
Assessment and permitted materials
18-20 pages essay, oral presentation and participation, final written test.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will become acquainted with typical forms and conventions of South African crime fiction, the role of the TRC, the complexity of 'truth' in the South African context, and narrative constructions of South Africa's future.
Examination topics
Oral presentations in class, accompanied by discussions.
