Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey lecture course sets out to provide the background in history, geography and population necessary for a deeper understanding of USAmerican life and arts in a foreign-language-learning context. The overall theme is "race", a problematic (and bitterly contested) concept, and how "race" (still) plays a major role in the political, social and cultural realities of the United States. Special sessions will deal with the ethnic mix of "white", "black", "red", "yellow", "brown" (any other colors?), its historical development and contemporary significance.
We may consider specific issues of the day - and all along the way, we will look at some historical and ideological differences between the United States and Canada.

Assessment and permitted materials

This will be based on a final 90-minute written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course is designed to introduce students to the comparative and interdisciplinary study of U.S.-American culture(s).
