After a basic historical introduction (1492-1865) the course will focus on the political, social and cultural realities of the later-19th-century era popularly known as the "Wild West" and its representations - and typical misrepresentations - in mainstream literature and film.This is a multi-media course: We will watch excerpts from paradigmatic Western movies, discuss some images and (passages from) literary texts and "meet" some of the most iconic Western figures, such as Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Wyatt Earp, Kit Carson, Geronimo, Buffalo Bill Cody, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, . . .
