Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an overview and introduction to research on English as a lingua franca (ELF) and intercultural communication. Together, we will review and discuss select research and concepts of intercultural communication (IC) and relate this to descriptive insights about English as a lingua franca, focusing in particular on pragmatic and interactional strategies. In our discussions, we will also touch upon potential pedagogical implications of research on ELF and IC.
After an initial input and discussion phase, students will work in groups for part of the semester to explore some areas of ELF and intercultural communication research in more detail. After the group phase, students will work independently in the final phase of the semester. BEd students who decide to write their bachelor thesis in this course will draw on existing publications to either a) analyze and describe a particular aspect of ELF in the Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE) or b) critically analyze documents related to English language teaching with regard to a particular aspect of ELF or intercultural communication. BEd students who are not doing their bachelor thesis in this course will work on individual final assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Class participation, required readings, course assignments, collaborative writing task & presentation (50 %)
• Bachelor paper or final assignment (50 %)

The minimum requirements for passing the course are:
(a) regular class attendance (max. 2 absences)
(b) handing in assignments on time
(c) active engagement in group work and presentation
(d) handing in the bachelor paper or final assignment (on time)
(e) refraining from plagiarism in all tasks
(f) attaining a minimum of 60% of all course points.
