Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar addresses PhD candidates who are planning or currently writing a PhD thesis in the fields of English and American Studies (Literature and Culture). Participants will be given the opportunity to present their projects and to discuss key issues or unresolved problems of their work in progress. You will receive critical feedback concerning your methodological and theoretical approach. Practical guidance concerning formal requirements as well as the challenges of approaching a topic and structuring the argument will also be offered.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance; active (!) in-class participation; reading assignments; oral presentation of the PhD project, preferably accompanied by a PPT presentation; handouts including a short summary and the prospective structure of the thesis (or, if applicable, excerpts or thesis chapters).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
It is the aim of this course to support PhD candidates who are currently writing their theses by means of critical feedback as well as handouts on thematic and methodological issues. Participants will be enabled to discuss their projects at length.
Examination topics
Presentation by students, based on PowerPoint and handouts; close readings and critical analyses of text excerpts; forum discussions on Moodle; critical examination of the PhD projects; mock exams.
