Aims, contents and method of the course

This class will focus on characteristic features stars, celebrities and royalty have in common, such as their paradoxical status between the ordinary and the extraordinary. Star Studies and Celebrities Studies have over the last twenty years established themselves as fields of research in their own right at the interface of a number of disciplines such as film studies, cultural studies, sociology or history to name just a few. This course will provide you with an introduction to the key approaches and mayor developments within Star Studies and Celebrities Studies and will help you explore the diversity of approaches available.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, participation in class discussions of set readings, oral presentation, final written essay; research paper of 10000 words max.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This class will provide you with a versatile toolkit to integrate the analysis of stars, celebrities and royalty into your study projects.

Examination topics

Small-group and all-class discussions of regular set readings, classes run by invited experts in the field, a paper presentation (seminar conference format, attendance obligatory, provisional date is whole day December 3, and one slot during week 49, depending on number of participants).
