Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, students will develop their skills in describing the formal elements of films, while also examining the work of women directors and their role throughout film history. The description of filmic forms serves a crucial role in the study of film because only by honing our skills of describing of how a film is made up visually and audially we can move on to analysing and interpreting. While the first part of the course will be dedicated to the formal analysis of film, the second part will introduce students to some of the critical debates in film studies, particularly those that have been central to feminist film theory.

Focusing on anglophone cinemas, the course will discuss the work of women directors from the early days of cinema to the present, both from within and outside the mainstream film industry. We will apply the analytical skills acquired in the first part of the course to examine at the visual, aural, and narrative elements employed in these films. In doing so, we will address questions like: Are there narrative and stylistic that characterize films directed by women? How do these films challenge (or perpetuate) institutionalized stereotypes and the intersecting ideologies of gender, race, and class? We will also consider the cultural and industrial factors that have shaped the work of women directors and ponder how studying women director might change our conception of film history and the filmic canon.

Assessment and permitted materials

In-class participation, mid-term test, and final essay.

Examination topics

Assessment is based on the criteria outlined above. The mid-term test and the final essay will be based on the material covered in class, assigned readings and films screened in the course.
