Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Word, image, gesture, sound - more often than not, media texts will rely on a multitude of representational resources to make their point. This course sets out to explore multimodal communication in an Anglophone context by examining the persuasive styles, rhetorics and aesthetics involved in advertisement: How do media texts create desire? Why does a video go viral? And what is there to learn from a spoof?
Key concepts of Cultural Studies, Media Studies and Social Semiotics add up to a toolkit that enables students and future teachers to critically analyse the multimodal media texts that inescapably compete for our attention.

Assessment and permitted materials

In-class and online participation; group presentation; midterm exam; final portfolio.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aimed at BA students and teacher trainees, this course is designed to contribute to both the theoretical understanding and practical skills involved in Critical Media Analysis.

Examination topics

Students will be introduced to concepts especially of Cultural Studies and Social Semiotics that contribute to a critical engagement with the multimodal media texts of advertisement (and not only advertisement). Readings, viewings and class discussions will be supplemented by online performance, group research and peer feedback.
