Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, participation in classroom discussions; oral presentation; portfolio consisting of two written assignments.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
50 points for the two portfolio papers
30 points oral presentation of the selected topic
20 class participation and discussions
Students have to fulfill all course requirements (each with at least 50%) and to score at least 60 points altogether to pass this course.
Grading scale:
1: 100-91p
2: 90-81p
3: 80-71p
4: 70-60p
5: 59-0p
Students are expected to write a seminar paper (or a BA thesis), to give an oral presentation of the paper in class, to participate in class discussions. All students must read all the texts discussed in class.

- Identification of the most significant literary genres and authors, as well as the specificity of the historical and cultural development of Australia, from indigenous, convict to contemporary migrant and multicultural issues, gender and the related issues of literary hybridization.
Aims and Competences gained:
- Knowledge of the selected Australian authors, with special regard to contemporary literary creativity: films (My Brilliant Career,Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Year of Living Dangerously, Rabbitt-Proof Fence, Australia), selected short stories and essays. The list/copies will be handed to the students in class.
- The ability to reflect on different interpretive standpoints, depending on the milieu and the contextualization of films, literary works and cultural essays in the appropriate socio-political context and to formulate an effective, well argued and linguistically correct oral presentation of the seminar paper in class.
