Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Popular culture has often been marked by the absence of marginalized groups. However, those on the periphery have slowly come into view since the refugee “crisis” in 2015. This course shall examine the representations of refugees in both fictional and non-fictional film.

Issues of note will be the representation of male refugees, violence, reactions and counter-reactions to the arrival of refugees as well as a comparison of representations of refugees in different eras.

Films will include: Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017), Eternity and a Day (1998), Into the Fire: The Hidden Victims of Austerity in Greece (2013), Casablanca (1942), Children of Men (2006), In This World (2002), Welcome (2009), District 9 (2009), The Land Between (2014) and others.

Students will learn technical film terminology as well as how to apply film analysis as a tool for their future studies. The course will boast an interactive, pragmatic approach that emphasizes practical skills that can be used by the students in their academic and professional careers.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be weekly presentations on the films as well as feedback reports for the other students. Students will write a paper at the end of the semester.
