Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

By analysing Key Art (i.e. promotional campaigns for movies such as film posters, movie trailers, movie websites), the class aims at exploring popular culture and the interrelation of representation, consumption, production and power.

Therefore, we will engage with theories of multimodality, social semiotics and contemporary communication to examine narrative strategies, visual design and convergence; we will get acquainted with historical and contemporary practices of the film industry and audiences to look into the impact and implications of these 'ordinary' cultural texts and practices.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation and performance in class, offline & online homework activities, final portfolio covering the readings and a write-up of individual study projects.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at enhancing visual literacy, (new) media literacy and doing Cultural Studies

Examination topics

Next to class readings, in-class tasks, discussions and blogging, students will plan, carry out and reflect on a group-based project to be presented in class or online.
