Aims, contents and method of the course

Content: In "Austria: Made in Hollywood" we examine select Hollywood films set in Austria in their historical and industrial contexts and interpret the celluloid constructions of place and national identities. In the discussions, we will attempt to answer the questions: how, why, and with what result Hollywoods Austria and its inhabitants have been constructed. To uncover the multiple meanings of the celluloid images of Austria and Austrians and their impact on the American imagination, we will explore the interaction between historical conditions in the United States and Austria and Austrias screen incarnations.
Method: Lecturing and discussion of films and readings
Aims: The aims of the course are to see how the films reveal much about conflicting American mores and fantasies and to examine to what extent film presentations dovetail with or influence Americans perceptions of Austria or Austrians.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance; active and informed participation in class discussions; short in-class papers based on readings and films; sequence analyses, final project (presentation and paper)
