Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This survey will outline the history of English/British and American literature(s) from the late 16th to the middle of the 19th centuries, from the beginning of the English Renaissance (ca. 1580) to the end of the "American Renaissance" (ca. 1865). The lectures will discuss exemplary texts of all genres (in full or in excerpts) and put them in the political and social context of their time. The course will be multidisciplinary and include Cultural Studies aspects.
In addition, students will be invited to consult the relevant entries in the many literary histories, companions and anthologies available in the departmental library.
