Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This class starts from the assumption that movies and films firmly belong to young people's everyday lived experience. This means that both the ability to analyse film and a critical understanding of film need to be integral parts of literacy. We will examine the use of movies and film in foreign language learning and practical applications for the classroom will be suggested. We will cover a wide range of topics, ranging from using film as a pedagogical aid in the classroom and to using film for self-study. You will have the opportunity to visit schools, observe lessons and gain some teaching practice.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance, participation in class discussions, portfolio notes, teaching project.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the course is twofold: first, to learn about new ways and methods how to sensitise pupils to issues relating to the cinema in the foreign language classroom and second, to gain teaching experience.
Examination topics
In class at university: small group and all-class discussions of set readings and of individual teaching projects (pre-teaching and post-teaching). On location at selected schools: class observation, teaching a lesson.
