Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents:

In this class, we will be looking at ways of promoting the reading of literature/culture in the EFL classroom and at the aims and principles underlying such approaches. This exploration will be based on patterns that guide the reading of 'texts'; (i.e. various kinds of literary and cultural production such as short stories, novels, pop songs, poetry, images, drama, etc.) in a foreign language and will employ a broad range of materials. Students will try out some of these methods during a self-organized visit to an Austrian school classroom.

Aims:

- Students get to know principles and challenges of teaching and reading literature/culture in the EFL classroom.
- Students become aware of the roles of literature and culture in the Austrian school system (school books, curricula, SRP, etc.).
- Students are introduced to a range of texts that can be used in the EFL classroom.
- Students try out methods to teach the reading of literary texts in the EFL classroom.
