Aims, contents and method of the course

You will learn about principles underlying a ‘Communicative+Cognitive’ approach to grammatical description and to the learning of grammar as well as the methodology of teaching grammar.

Assessment and permitted materials

You will carry out regular out of class assignments and reading tasks. You will complete two written assignments; one theoretical, one practical. You will hold an oral presentation related to one of the two assignments (in groups).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You will have a greater understanding of what ‘Communicative’ grammar means and how it differs from traditional grammar. You will have a deeper understanding of how grammar is learnt and how pedagogy can support learning. You will develop an ability to analyse and adapt grammar activities to make them more effective and to design activities of your own

Examination topics

Presentation, illustration and discussion of theoretical aspects. Trying out, analysing and evaluating grammar exercises and activities. Establishing criteria for effective grammar teaching.
