Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
We will analyse the selected texts from a wide range of approaches to the study of literature and cultural studies and revise the basic theoretical tools for analysing literary texts. A special focus will be placed on the relation between frame narratives and metafictionality.
Assessment and permitted materials
regular attendance and participation in classroom discussions; oral presentations; portfolio consisting of different assignments (e.g. writing a review, close reading of key passages, fictional blog entry)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Revising the basic parameters of literary analysis; providing students with a basic toolkit for a thorough and in-depth engagement with literary texts.
Examination topics
Classroom discussions, student presentations, mini conference (December 6th, 2014)
Reading list
This Critical Readings course is chiefly concerned with canonical frame narratives. Texts to be studied include Thomas Kyd: The Spanish Tragedy (1582-1592), Mary Shelley: Frankenstein (1818), Emily Brontë: Wuthering Heights (1847), Joseph Conrad: Heart of Darkness (1899) and Michael Frayn: Noises Off (1982). Students are advised to familiarise themselves with the reading material in due course. Additional texts (short stories, poems and theoretical articles) will be provided on moodle.
