Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, we will discuss selections from British literature across the centuries, focusing on genre not just as an aesthetic framework but also as a power discourse that “contribute[s] to the social structuring of meaning” (Frow 1). Working with a wide range of theoretical approaches, participants will hone their skills in the critical analysis and interpretation of poetry, drama, narrative fiction and non-fiction, and will deepen their knowledge of concepts and terminology central to the study of literary texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active class participation (20%)
Group presentations (30%)
Portfolio (consisting of a critical review, a reading journal, a short academic paper – 50%)

Examination topics

This is an interactive course (“prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”). In addition to completing a (written) portfolio, participants are expected to read all set texts and actively participate in class throughout the semester.
