Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Uncanny doppelgängers, doubles, and mysterious metamorphoses abound in English and American literature and film. In this course, we will examine various aspects of this trope, ranging from Victorian figurations of masculinity and imperialism and Virginia Woolf’s idea of the “androgynous mind” to modern forms of mirroring and doubling in the context of replicants and cyborgs. Topics covered in this course will include: the doppelgänger as a feature of the uncanny; queer doublings; posthumanism as a transgression of the binary between self and other; issues of inclusion and exclusion; canon formation.
