Aims, contents and method of the course

Students will get to know the creativity of the selected representative Canadian literary authors with emphasis on the novel, Margaret Atwood will be given special attention.
- Analysis and interpretation of the selected literary texts and the application of various critical approaches. Texts will be given to students in class (poetry and short prose).
- Identification of the most significant literary genres and authors, but including also the specificity of the historical and cultural development of Canada, from indigenous to contemporary migrant and multicultural issues, gender and the related issues of literary hybridization.
Aims and Competences gained:
- Knowledge of the selected Canadian authors, with special regard to contemporary literary creativity in the novel genre, selected short stories and poetry. The list will be handed to the students in class.
- The ability to reflect on different interpretive standpoints, depending on the milieu and the contextualization of literary works in the appropriate socio-political context and to formulate an effective, well argued and linguistically correct oral presentation of the seminar paper in class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular attendance, participation in classroom discussions; oral presentation; portfolio consisting of two written assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50 points for the two portfolio papers
30 points oral presentation of the selected topic
20 class participation and discussions
Students have to fulfill all course requirements (each with at least 50%) and to score at least 60 points altogether to pass this course.

1: 100-91p
2: 90-81p
3: 80-71p
4: 70-60p
5: 59-0p
