Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This PhD seminar will be dedicated, in an interdisciplinary way, to advanced research on North America, including projects from the fields of literary and cultural studies, linguistics, art history, cultural anthropology, history, political science, geography, economics, and other related fields, as long as their focus is on the U.S., Canada, or the Caribbean.

Regular attendance, individual media-based presentations, handouts, active participation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminar pursues a threefold aim: 1) it will provide a forum for PhD students to present their thesis projects to an expert audience and to discuss these projects in detail, including theoretical as well as practical issues about writing a thesis, 2) it will enable PhD students to build networks across campus, and to engage with different methodological and critical approaches, and 3) it will serve as a platform for the exchange with top researchers from Europe, the U.S., and Canada, who will contribute insights into their own research projects from various fields, including topics as diverse as biometrical surveillance, Asian American life writing, or Canadian First Nations art.
